Family Medicine Q & A

What Conditions Can a Family Physician Help With?

A family physician can help with a wide variety of conditions, illnesses, and concerns. These include: Diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, respiratory illnesses, depression, anxiety, skin problems, common colds, flu, ear infections, and virtually all types of illnesses that impact children and adults today.

What is a Family Medicine Physician?

A family medicine physician serves as a family’s main doctor in many cases. The family care doctor often cares for patients in the same family who range from toddler age up to “super senior” status. A family doctor has extensive experience in general medicine, which means that they can treat most conditions. When a patient is ill or has any type of health concern, their family physician is usually who they will take that issue to first. Therefore, the family care doctor is often diagnosed as a primary care provider for insurance purposes. In some cases, the condition will require a specialist, but in most cases the family doctor can provide prompt and effective care.

When Does a Patient Require Care From a Specialist?

The patient and family medicine physician can discuss medical issues together to determine whether a visit to a specialist is needed. For example, a patient who suffers from issues that are suspected to be neurological in origin can be referred to a neurologist, or patients who need bone surgery for fractures can be referred to an orthopedic surgeon. In some cases, the visits to the specialist will only be temporary, especially if the condition is not a chronic one. In other situations, for example in the case of a patient who suffers from multiple sclerosis, the patient will usually see a neurologist on a regular basis, but will continue to go to the family care physician for all their basic medical needs. The family doctor will coordinate care with specialists whenever needed.
